Upholding Open Access: UiTM Library Explores Creative Commons (CC) Licensing for Digital Excellence

SHAH ALAM, March 5, 2026 – To foster a culture of legal and open information sharing, the Digital Library Division of the UiTM Library Department successfully organized a specialized online briefing titled "Creative Commons (CC) License Briefing". This session was designed to equip library personnel with the essential knowledge to navigate the complexities of digital copyright and open access in a global academic landscape. The briefing featured Muhammad Akmal Ahmat, a Senior Librarian from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), as the guest expert.

Creative Commons (CC) provides a standardized licensing framework that allows content creators to grant public permission for the use of their work under specific conditions. For a modern digital library, understanding these licenses is crucial for the legitimate management of university repositories and digital publications.

A total of 14 professional and executive staff members participated in the session, which was led by the Director of the Digital Library Division, Dr. Hjh. Zalifah binti Awang Zakaria, and the Deputy Chief Librarian, Mohd Izwan bin Salim. The program aimed to achieve several strategic goals for the library's digital ecosystem for comprehensive understanding as to provide a deep dive into the functions and various categories of Creative Commons Licenses. The resource selection also important that it will empower staff with the knowledge to select appropriate licenses for digital materials uploaded to the portal or repository and also to ensure strict adherence to copyright laws, thereby maintaining the quality and integrity of the university's digital services while it can strengthen the sharing of open information resources to enhance the global impact of university research.

The training covered critical aspects of the digital ecosystem, including:

  1. The CC Ecosystem: An introduction to copyright principles and how CC licenses fit into modern scholarly communication.
  2. Decoding Symbology: A detailed explanation of CC license types, including BY (Attribution), NC (Non-Commercial), ND (No-Derivatives), and SA (Share-Alike).
  3. Practical Application: Guidance on how to correctly apply and choose specific CC licenses for written scholarly works.

By adopting global open access standards, the UiTM Library remains committed to providing a transparent and high-quality digital experience. This briefing marks a significant step in ensuring that the library's digital repositories are not only accessible but also fully compliant with international licensing standards, ultimately benefiting researchers and students alike.
