History Of Perpustakaan Dato' Jaafar Hassan
The library is the main division that functions to provide support and serve as the primary academic reference source of the university. The Perpustakaan Dato' Jaafar Hassan building, located in the heart of the university, is strategically situated within Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perlis Branch. This historic building is more than 40 years old. |
ESTABLISHMENT |
The library of Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM) Perlis Branch was established simultaneously with the founding of ITM Perlis Branch on 5 July 1974. The establishment of this branch campus was graciously consented by His Royal Highness Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni Almarhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail, the Raja of Perlis. It was initiated through the effort of ITM academic pioneers and planners, led by the late Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Ghazali Shafie, Chairman of the ITM Council, and Datuk Dr. Arshad Ayub, with the full cooperation of the Perlis State Government under the leadership of the then Chief Minister, YAB Dato' Jaafar bin Hassan. Physical facilities were very limited, where a renovated Rumah Pengakap building at Jalan Padang Katong, Kangar, Perlis served as the temporary campus for lecture rooms, administration, and the library. Student hostels were individual houses rented around Kangar. At the same time, the permanent campus on a 330-acre site in Arau, Perlis was under the first phase of construction. The first intake consisted of 258 students enrolled in Diploma in Accountancy, Diploma in Public Administration, Diploma in Secretarial Science, Diploma in Estate Management, Diploma in Business Management, and preparatory courses. These courses were handled by 15 lecturers/assistant lecturers and 31 non-academic staff. At that time, the library was known as Tun Abdul Razak Library (PTAR) with only 3 staff members and a collection of 200 books, housed in merely two book racks. |
RELOCATION |
By 1977, PTAR moved to the permanent campus in Arau, Perlis, even though the first phase of the campus construction was only completed in 1980. The relocation was made possible by the completion of a temporary wooden building complex (still standing today). In addition to the library block, the complex also included lecture halls, an auditorium, offices, and a college. PERPUSTAKAAN DATO' JAAFAR HASSAN This two-storey building could accommodate 800 seats for a student population of 2,500 and 200 staff members at that time. The library’s collection also increased to 35,000 books and other materials to support the courses offered then. |
ADDITIONAL BUILDING |
In 1993, an additional library building was constructed to accommodate the growing student population. It was connected to the existing building and provided an extra 400 seating capacity. |
NEW BUILDING EXPANSION |
By 2010, the collection had grown to 98,000 books, with 34 staff members, and 8,500 active users. Various additional services were introduced according to current developments and information needs. By 2010, the Perpustakaan Dato' Jaafar Hassan was more than 30 years old, making it the third oldest library in the UiTM system, and its physical capacity needed further expansion to meet the increasing demand. Discussions to construct a new library building adjacent to the existing one began in 2006. According to the library’s strategic plan, the new building was scheduled to be built in 2008 to accommodate an additional 12,000 students by 2012. However, construction was halted in 2010. The project resumed in 2015 and was fully completed and officially handed over to UiTM Perlis on 28 January 2016. |
NEW LIBRARY |
On 1 November 2016, the new library building was officially opened to all. The new building houses science-related collections and includes several specialized spaces such as seminar rooms, self-study rooms, meeting rooms, and a 16-hour study room. |
