Information Services

 

The Information Services Department is responsible in developing and maintaining collections of none book in nature. Reference and information services are provided by all libraries in the system. The library also provides a variety of user education programmes to enable users to utilize the library to its maximum potential.

Library Orientation Programme

The programme is a way to help new students familiarize themselves with the layout, regulations, types of services and facilities offered by PTAR. It is an ongoing program, and letters will be sent to faculties to remind them of sending the new students and staff to attend the program. The Library Orientation Programmes are conducted at the beginning of every new semester. New students are briefed on the services and facilities offered by the library followed by a tour of the library. They will also be introduced to the types of materials in the library such as books, journals, theses & dissertations, and conference proceedings. Faculties are invited to use this service as well as to recommend this free service to their students and staffs.

Information Skill Programmes

The Information Services Department also offers Information Skill Programmes to students and staffs. These programmes inculcate independent learning skills of students and staffs. The programme takes two (2) hours sessions, five (5) days a week held during office hours at IT Centre, Level 2, PTAR 1. Students and staffs will not only be introduced to the types of materials in the library but they can also have hands on in trying to search for these items in the library. Students and staffs will also be shown how to access and search the electronic databases.

Reference Consultations

Reference and information services are provided by all the libraries in the system. Enquiries may be made in person, over the telephone, by fax, and through email. The library also maintains Reference Desks manned by competent staff to assist users with their information needs at every level of the library. Students and staffs will be taught search strategies in information retrieval. This is one of the ways to help them retrieve from printed and electronic sources, and to evaluate information from the sources. Students and staffs will also be shown how to access and search the electronic databases such as the online journals. The Information Services Department consists of friendly Librarians who provide expert help in finding information, both in PTAR and on the Internet. The Librarians will assist users in using the reference collection such as books, online catalogue, computerized databases, and web pages. The Librarians also assist with any type of information need such as class research assignments.

Research Consultation Services

The Research Services offered, are more personal than what the user will receive from the other services. Here Researchers will be able to sit down and thrashes out their research methodology problems with the Librarians. The Librarian will assist the Researchers in their research with an information needs at every level. The Researchers also will be taught search strategies in information retrieval. This is a way to help them in retrieving from printed and electronic sources, and also to evaluate information from the sources. The Research Consultation Services can save lots of time and headaches by keeping track of sources they need for research, including articles, books, web pages, etc. But best of all the Librarian can help creates bibliographies for the Researchers in whatever style they need.

Liaison Officers


PTAR appoints a librarian to act as library Liaison Officer (LO). The LO collaborates with the relevant Program Coordinator and UiTM Head of Unit on all matters relating to their information needs. LO are in regular contact with the Faculty Program Coordinator on matters relating to journal subscriptions, cancellations and new title subscriptions, information services for students and staffs, and new library services and resources.
